Omxplayer should run an mp4 video file. One quick way of running it is to go to the file, right mouse click to open a list of options, scroll down to 'Copy path(s) and select this by left mouse clicking. Open up the LXTerminal and type in 'omxplayer', put in a space and then paste in the path by right mouse clicking, scrolling down to 'Paste' and left mouse clicking to add this to your omxplayer command. When you press 'Enter' the file should run.

Installing OMXPlayer on Raspberry Pi. Since I didn’t have any luck playing videos on the RPi using mplayer I found omxplayer after some search. It has the ability to use the RPi’s GPU thus taking some load of the CPU. Apt-get install libpcre3 fonts-freefont-ttf fbset libpcre3-dev libpcrecpp0 libva-dev libva-x11-1 libva1. Install omxplayer.

If it does not and there are spaces between any parts of the pasted Path put inverted commas at its beginning and its end. Paths with spaces between parts will run on a PC but will not run with omxplayer. You can do that if you are in the same directory as the videofile e.g. Cd /home/pi/Videos would put you in a directory on the SD card where you might store your videos and then you could put 'omxplayer video.mp4' into the LXTerminal and play it. I store my videos on a 128 GB USB stick so I would need to type a longer command e.g. Omxplayer /media/pi/USB/Downloads/Rock_n_Roll_America-3_default.mp4 or use File Manager to find this videofile and employ the 'Copy Path(s)' method I suggested earlier. Incidentally you may see '265' or '264' in the videofile path.

Omxplayer does not seem to play files with '265' but it does play files which include a '264'. I am not very technically minded so I hope that I have not confused you too much. An even quicker way of playing videos is to install the Minimal Kiosk Browser. The part that plays the video is called omxplayergui, Right clicking on a videofile will generate a menu which contains omxplayergui as an option.

Clicking on this option will usually play the video and it will play filenames which include spaces. If you do download VLC you should see mention of it in the Sound and Vision part of the Menu.

Kodi will play videofiles (possibly more varieties than omxplayer) and if you download that you will see if mentioned in the Sound and Vision part of the Menu. I cannot understand your continued interest in VLC.

The PC version works very well; the Raspberry Pi version will play audios but not videos unless you have the patience and ability to follow a very detailed set of instructions to produce a hardware-accelerated version. Why bother when omxplayer plays 1080 mp4 files so well? To what do you want to convert mp4 files?

What do want to play them with? VLC and mplayer are just not good enough at the moment.
